2011 City of Plano MCL Coliform Violation Notification

April 2011 routine water sampling for bacteriological analysis indicated 23 test results out of 217 samples returned with higher than acceptable results for total coliform bacteria, an indicator of possible contamination.  No pathogenic organisms (those which cause illness) and no indicators of fecal contamination (such as E.coli or fecal coliform) have been detected.  “In addition to our re-testing, we have employed a private lab and environmental consultant to review the issue,” said Gerald Cosgrove, Director of Public Works.  “Since May 1, 2011, all water samples have tested “good” with no presence of total coliform bacteria.”

2011 CENA Ladies Night Out (LNO)

LNO is a casual gathering of women in the neighborhood, our main goal is to eat, drink, laugh, and chat!  Scheduling is very flexible - someone decides to be hostess and selects a restaurant, date, and time - then notifies the LNO group via email.  To be on the eVite list for the next event, simply send your email to CENA_LNO@yahoo.com.  And feel free to bring a friend - the more the merrier!

We have had a lot of fun this year trying out several restaurants in historic downtown Plano.  On Feb 8th we had some great food (at half-price!) at Vickery Park, on April 28th we enjoyed cold beers and delicious pub fare at The Fillmore Pub, and most recently on July 8th we met for "Wine Down Wednesday" at Zanata for half-price bottles of wine!  Don't hesitate to contact Liz Riley at social@creekbendestates.org for more information about the group.

2011 Creekbend Estates Neighborhood Garage Sale

The 2nd Annual Creekbend Estates Neighborhood Garage Sale was held on May 14-15 and was a great success!  The weather was beautiful and we had at least 9 yard sales going on in the neighborhood Saturday: 4 on Lakeway, 2 on Millstream, and 1 each on Greenpark, Spring View, and Lake Ridge.  There was a lot of foot traffic with neighbors looking for good deals, not to mention a few who made some great sales!  I highly encourage all residents to either hold their own sale, or enjoy a Saturday bargain hunting stroll for the next event - it's a great way to clean out your closets, find some deals, and meet your neighbors.

2011 Great American Cleanup

Saturday, April 23 @ 8am-11am - Chisholm Trail creek from Orlando/Millstream to Lakestream/Garner

12 volunteers total got a combined 21 bags of trash from the trail.

2011 Entryways

Spring is upon us and with it comes sprinkler repairs. The unusually cold temperatures this past Winter resulted in some damaged water lines in the landscaping bed at the Lakestream Drive entrance, in addition to 4 broken sprinkler heads along Alma Drive. College Fund Landscaping completed these repairs and did a thorough inspection of the entire system towards the end of March, so we are now ready for the warmer temperatures that Spring and Summer will bring. We will continue to water only as necessary based on current rainfalls to keep our water bills as low as possible.

The board would also like to make special mention of the beds at the Lakeway Drive entrance to Creekbend Estates. One of our board members, Hope Nusbaum generously donated the funds to have these beds re-landscaped in March.  Please join us in thanking Hope for her generosity and continued service to CENA over the years. We hope that this inspires others in the neighborhood to volunteer for a position on our board or simply contribute their voluntary annual dues to CENA, so that we might continue to maintain our entryways, and keep up the neighborhood’s positive image.

Help Us Welcome New Neighbors!

If you know someone new to our neighborhood, please notify the Membership Committee. We'd like to give them a copy of Creekbend News, as well as a personal welcome to the neighborhood.

Save Money and Meet the Challenge

Pay as you throw…households that generate a smaller amount of trash may request a 68-gallon refuse cart and pay $2.60 a month less for trash service, an annual savings of $31.20.  Service with a 95-gallon cart is $13.85 per month, and service with a 68-gallon cart is $11.25 per month.

Many families use a smaller trash cart if they recycle more!  Fill up the recycle cart with acceptable items, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, small card board boxes, #1 and #2 plastic bottles, glass jars and bottles, aluminum cans, metal cans, chipboard (found in cereal and cracker boxes) and telephone books.  Additionally, to encourage more recycling, the City of Plano will deliver a second recycle cart for no additional monthly charge.

Glenna Brown, Recycling Education Coordinator, announced that the City of Plano’s Sustainability and Environmental Services Department has issued a Recycling Challenge for 2007 to recycle 25,000 tons by September 30, 2007.  “Through the end of February, we are 18% below where we need to be in order to meet this goal,” Ms. Brown said.  “Neighborhood associations can have a positive impact on recycling by encouraging everyone in the association to recycle as much as they can for the good of the environment and to save money,” Ms. Brown said.

To see how much your neighborhood is recycling compared to other areas in the City, visit Live Green In Plano

Put all recyclables together in your recycle cart (green with black lid).  If you still have a divider in your recycle cart, make more room for more recyclables by calling Customer Service at 972-769-4150 for FREE divider removal.

Visibility Solution for Alley

After too many near-misses coming around the northeast corner on the alley behind her home on Millstream, Hope Nusbaum paid about $89 for a convex mirror to spot traffic coming both ways. The City provided free installation of the mirror and will maintain it. Hope reports that drivers are using the mirror and that traffic has been slowing to safer speeds since the mirror was installed.

A driver can never anticipate when a child might run out from behind a fence. If you are concerned about visibility on your alley, caused by fences or blind corners, investing in a convex mirror could make it safer.

Our main purpose in issuing this newsletter is to encourage neighbors to come forward and serve on the CENA Board starting in January. All positions are open. Many of you have supported CENA for years with your membership dues. Many have served on the board in the past or helped with their time and energy in the early years when we cleaned, trimmed, and planted the entryways ourselves. Next year we really need a little of your time. The commitment only involves 3 to 4 short meetings a year plus 5 to 10 hours on your area of responsibility.

Maybe  you and a friend in the neighborhood are willing to co-chair a position on the CENA Board. The two of you may have talked about what you’d like to see done—perhaps sponsoring more social activity, giving a boost to the know-your-neighbor policy of Crime Watch, establishing neighborhood emergency procedures, or welcoming new neighbors. (Some members of CENA have agreed to pay for welcome baskets with their own money, but we need coordination on the purchase and delivery.  Another member offered to buy meat for a neighborhood barbeque.)  Did you enjoy the Progressive Dinners we held a few years back?

You and a friend could run for a position, share responsibilities, and bring fresh ideas to the board.  If you are willing to serve, please let one of the board members know.  Contact Us
